panda-escapades asked: If we know as a society that higher education is an investment for a better society, then why instead of following the example of European societies and providing it at a reasonable price do we demand that our young adults be burdened for debt for the rest of their lives?
President Obama would like the first two years of college to be free for responsible students. This builds on numerous steps he has taken to make college more affordable, including expanded Pell Grants and tax credits for college. But ultimately someone does need to pay for the costs of college and having the beneficiary of the higher earnings and better job prospects it creates bear part of the cost is reasonable.

Law students carry such a large student loan debt that it prohibits them from public service employment; thus, grant loan forgiveness to lawyers as is presently done for M.D.s, R.N.s and others similarly situated. In other words, if America wants lawyers to serve lower income clients then forgive student loans. Simple, really.
